Melina Marchetta and Books Alive

Think September and you think of Spring, Father’s Day, and Australia’s month-long celebration of books and reading – Books Alive, the biggest annual promotion of books in the country.

Perhaps you have already picked up your free copy of the 2009 Books Alive Guide, 50 Books You Can’t Put Down. Perhaps you’ve been into your favourite bookshop (how about the National Library Bookshop?) and bought a book featured in the guide. What else can you do to be part of the Books Alive celebrations?

Join us at the National Library, of course. Next Thursday, 10 September, one of the Books Alive featured authors, Melina Marchetta, will be visiting the National Library for two events.

Featured author, Melina Marchetta

Featured author, Melina Marchetta

First up, at 12.30pm, Melina will be talking about the film adaptation of her first, award-winning novel, Looking for Alibrandi. Melina’s talk will be followed by a screening of the film (which introduced Anthony LaPaglia as a romantic lead).

Then at 6.oopm, Melina will talk about Books Alive, writing for young adults and her most recent novel Finnikin of the Rock, her first ‘fantasy’ novel filled with ancient magic, bloodshed and a quest to return home. Melina’s talk will be followed by a booksigning.

Both events are free. Both events celebrate Books Alive. If you’d like to join us, please phone 02 6262 1271 or email bookings@nla.gov.au.
