The ACT heat for the 2009 Australian Poetry Slam is on at the National Library tonight! There’s still room and time for you to enter but you MUST register before 5pm today by phoning us on 02 6262 1271. You also need to be ready to perform two poems.
The ACT winner and runner-up will take home $500 and $100 respectively and compete for the Australian Poetry Slam ‘09 national title in Sydney on 3 December. The national winner will receive $5 000 and a gig at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in Bali in 2010.
Last year’s national winner, of course, was also the ACT winner, Omar Musa. His win precipitated a fantastic year. Omar has just returned from appearances at the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival and the Singapore Writers’ Festival. His poetry was described in The Jakarta Post as “being up there with W.H. Auden’s post WWI pieces in their harshness of blood tenderness”. He’s received numerous invitations to perform and has published his first book of poetry, The Clocks, the first edition of which has sold out.
Let’s see if the ACT can take out the national title two years in a row.
