Cataloguing and Metadata Futures

Bemal Rajapatirana, the ANBD Manager, spoke about new developments.

To date, over 50,000 duplicate records have been removed by the Offline Duplicate Detection software. We anticipate that 250,000 duplicates will be removed by the first ISBN pass through the database; this will take 3-4 months.

An upgrade to the cataloguing client will be distributed later this year.

The cataloguing server will be upgraded in the first quarter of next year. The release will include support for transmission of records from WorldCat to Libraries Australia using SRU Record Update. We recommend you talk to your vendor about implementing this protocol on your own platform, so that the ANBD can be updated in real time.

We are currently undertaking a project to add OCLC identifiers to the Search and Cataloguing databases and include them in records distributed to user libraries. We are keen to do this to improve deep linking from WorldCat to library catalogues. We expect OCLC numbers to be in production by December. We will be happy to provide you with concordance files to support this new key – just look out for our offer later this year.

As part of the ongoing Record Import Service, we plan to update RIS data validation and conversion algorithms to reduce the number of obsolete MARC data elements and coded data data values that are added to the ANBD. We will also use global changes to selectively replace obsolete MARC21 data elements and codes in ANBD records.

Looking ahead: Resource Description and Access (RDA); addition of records for digital resources. The latter is supported automatically with several vendors – just ask us how you can activate this.

Pam Gatenby reprised her CSU Seminar presentation from yesterday – refer to it for full details – regarding the Reimagining Libraries Project 8.

Deirdre Kiorgaard – RDA and other standards. LCSH – genre/form headings being derived – law, religion, geography. IFLA names of persons guide will be used in RDA. Australia working on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders with AIATSIS.

What RDA is:

It is a new standard to replace AACR. RDA has a broader scope – includes authorities. Instructions will be a web tool. It is not a replacement for MARC21 (that is, not an encoding scheme) or an ILMS. Won’t necessarily result in less cataloguing work, but will facailitate exploitation of FRBR. The National Library of Australia will be involved in its testing.

Release expected in June 2010. Earliest implementation is mid 2011. The Australian Committee on Cataloguing and the National Library will provide advice and information via training, and documentation on library system changes such as required data conversions. However, it is possible to start now by just learning about RDA – refer to this presentation next week on the Libraries Australia web site for appropriate links. The ACOC website provides the most information.

Questions:

Q1. re batch loading of authorities, matching is robust, but we will have to resolve the non-hits.

Q2. the widget for SRU Record Update – what date will it be available? Bemal advised that some supporting functionality will be available in CBS version 5, which could be used to encourage vendors to adopt it also.

Q3. accommodating local information in ANBD records – plans for adding annotation data? This does require system changes to support Institution Specific Data (ISD) in the MARC21 Holdings format. The CBS system supports it, but it will also require local system support. An Expert Advisory Group report describes the Libraries Australia position on this.

Q4. modifying records to support minimum Libraries Australia record requirements?

Q5. Will we lose the advanced search service? No, not from the Libraries Australia subscription service. It will also be possible to use facets searching in Trove to replicate this sort of functionality.

Q6. Personalisation in Libraries Australia – will a certain type of searches still be permitted? For example, relevance ranking options through sort will remain. We can identify futher improvements for the subscription search service through our ning space.

Q7. Victorian User Group meeting keen to know why enhanced records lost, such as diacritics. Important to tell us which records, so that we can rereate the trail in case corruption occurred. Please contact our Help Desk at any time.
