In early April we took our little team out to visit the Canberra Zine Fair! The following is a little photo essay of our day…
Let’s give a round of applause to the ACT Writer’s Centre, the wonderful zinesters and the Canberra Contemporary Art Space for the Canberra Zine Fair!
Deb, Cait, Marj and I had such a fabulous time pouring over zines and making selections for the collection and we eventaully came away with over fifty new items!
Oh zine makers and artists! Please put a link to your blog or website in the comments if you were there on the day… we’d love to know who you all are!

I’m really excited that the new blog is up and running! I was at the Zine Fair (my table is where the big cluster of people is in the middle of the third photo.
My blog is Brown Paper Bunny if you’d like to check it out.
Love the blog! I was wondering which Australian zines you don’t collect and why?
Glad you’re enjoying our blog Tara and thanks for your question. Unfortunately we can’t possibly hope to collect a copy of every Australian zine that is being produced – there are many thousands, and they are often made in very small numbers and only swapped or sold at zine fairs, among other zinesters, or at a particular distro. What we try to do is collect a representative sample of the sort of zines that are being produced. So we look for a variety of different styles, topics, formats etc. to get a “flavour” of the range that’s being produced and how this may change over time. We also attempt to get zines from around the country, not just Sydney/Melbourne/Canberra. We visit zine fairs when we can to look for interesting items to add to the Library, we have some zinesters who deposit their zines with us, and we have also received some great donations of zines from a couple of zine collectors. If you have any suggestions of “classic” zines that you think we should have, I’d really love to hear about them! Our aim is to ensure that zines are preserved safely for the future in our collection. They are an important and wonderfully creative phenomenon.
So how can I find out about this zine fair for this year? There doesn’t seem to be anything online.
